Omega x Swatch Moonswatch Mission to the Sun Watch Review SO33J100

I recently picked up an Omega x Swatch Mission to the Sun while traveling to continue my series on all of the Moonswatch models. This is one of the brightest colors (appropriately), and the only one with a metallic dial.

Omega x Swatch Moonswatch Mission to the Sun First Impressions:

Previously I had never seen a Mission to the Sun up close. The Swatch associate told me that she loved this model, as it is the only one with a metallic dial. While you can see it on the Swatch website, the attractive sunburst pattern gets washed out in most other photos that I have seen of it. I purposely reduced the exposure of a few of these photos and took the one below without the use of strobes to better capture the effect.

It is more visible in person and works well to attractively convey the feeling of looking at the sun.

The Mission to the MoonOmega x Swatch Moonswatch Mission to the Sun Details:

As with many other Moonswatch variants, the Sun has white subdials. In this case, they have small yellow rings inside, which I find attractive. The chronograph seconds hand and subdial hands are described as orange on the Swatch website. While I'd agree, the orange has so much red in it, that the watch also works on red straps.

 

 

The tachymeter scale is white on this model with numerals matching the hand color.

The Mission to the Sun has conventional stick hands for the hours, minutes, and chronograph subdials (only the Mars has the unusual Alaska Project-style chronograph hands with lume).

The Swatch S engraved in the underside of the crystal as with all of the other versions. This is an homage to the the Omega Greek symbol you'd find on a Speedmaster Professional that it's modelled after.

Wearing the Omega x Swatch Moonswatch Mission to the Sun:

I find the Moonswatches quite comfortable due to the ergonomic Speedmaster case shape, and lightweight construction.

The Sun's legibility is not as good as some of the other variants. It's still easy to read the time, but the white hands tend to blend in with the subdials. As with all Moonswatch models, I wish the hands were thicker, but quartz movements tend to require lightweight hands. Other versions use different colors for the chronograph hands vs running seconds, but they are all orange on the Sun.

All Moonswatches (other than Pluto), use white lume that glows green at night. It's not extremely bright or thick but can be read in most conditions after a good charge.

The Omega x Swatch Moonswatch Mission to the Sun Strap

The Sun's strap is of the same design as the other Moonswatches, but this time in white with yellow "hardware."

It feels flimsy as the others do, and a bit bulky, but it is otherwise lightweight and comfortable.

The Sun can't pull a wide variety of strap colors like Moon or Mercury can models can. White and yellow straps look great, and black of course. If you want a bolder look, a red or orange strap tie in with the hands and tachy scale. It has 20mm lugs like the other versions, so there are many great options. I have been swapping a lot, but like wearing it on a yellow Slim Ridge FKM Rubber strap.

The Omega x Swatch Moonswatch Mission to the Sun Movement

All versions of the Moonswatch use the same Swatch quartz chronograph movement. It can record minutes, seconds, and tenths of a second, as well as lap timing. It does have a phantom date position despite lacking a date display.

The battery cover features an image of the Sun,

and the caseback has the same text as other models.

Conclusion:

The Swatch x Omega Moonswatch Mission to the Sun is one of the brightest versions in the Moonswatch range. It's less versatile, but also more fun to wear. A bright yellow watch is not for everyone, but I've enjoyed wearing something different. Additionally, the metallic dial gives it a higher-end look than the other versions.
